ASSESS YOUR LOT & TOPOGRAPHY
TO GAIN PERSPECTIVE
When you’re looking at your complete
feng shui, it’s helpful if you can look at
both the “big picture” and the “small
picture.”  In feng shui this is called the
big tai chi and the small tai chi.  You may
have seen the tai chi symbol.  This symbol represents the yin and yang – male and female.  This symbol represents the balance that we seek to achieve in ourselves and in our homes.

A home that’s out of balance, is a home where people are uncomfortable, unproductive, unhappy, and don’t thrive.  One that’s in balance has occupants who are satisfied with life and whose life is rewarding and enjoyable.  This is our goal in feng shui:  to correct the flaws and enhance the good aspects so that your home – and your life – is in balance again.  Concentrating on the large and small tai chi can help you to achieve this.

A cornerstone of the tai chi concept is to look both outward and inward.  For the purposes of Applied Feng Shui, we want to look at the big picture image of your home and how it sits in the landscape, and we want to look at the small tai chi of how your home sits on your lot.  To do this, you’ll need a drawing of your plot or lot that your home is on.  If you’ve purchased your home, you should have received one of these from the bank or mortgage company or company that surveyed your property.

How Your Lot Drawing Can Help You
Having a diagram of your property, or lot, can show you interesting features about your lot, such as where your home is in relationship to the property, as well as the shape of your property.  This can give you important clues about how the property will influence your life while you live in this house.

Shape Is Important
One of the first things you want to look at on your property is the shape of your lot.  The shape of your lot can tell you a number of things, such as which sectors are missing, influencing factors, and where your house falls in the sectors.  Look at the shapes below.  The front of the house is indicated by the arrows.

Lot 1Lot 2

Lot 3 Lot 4

Lot 5 (Corner Lot, funnel-shaped lot)Lot 6 (Corner Lot, House on Square)

The shapes of these houses are fairly common ones.  In feng shui, the rule is that regular shapes are best.  Regular shapes would include square or rectangle shapes, such as Lot 1 and Lot 4.  These are best because it means there are no missing sectors and life should proceed smoothly and more easily.

When looking at your lot diagram, apply the lo shu square to it by dividing the lot into nine equal squares, called a lo shu square.  This will give you an indication of where your house falls on the lot and the sector it falls in.  Plus, it will show you if there are any missing corners on your lot.

Shapes that are irregular, such as the triangle are problematic (Lot 3).  If you have a triangular shaped lot, you’ll be missing important sectors based on the direction of the house.  Plus, the shape is similar to a funnel, with the pointed end toward the rear.  This means money will be siphoned away.

If the triangle was reversed and the house faced the point, chances are there is no place available at the front of the house for energy to gather.  Therefore, the house on this kind of plot might show a decline in energy over time, with the health and wealth of the family declining over time.  Placing bright lights at the front of the house and the sides, where large sectors would be missing, would be one way to stimulate chi entering the home.

However, shapes such as the auspicious “money bag” shape (Lot 2) on the previous page means that money will come in and stay there.  That’s because money bags are typically smaller at the neck and larger at the base, enabling the accumulation energy (and wealth!).
