Many people consider luck to be outside of their grasp.  Others believe that luck can be influenced toward ill or good.  Many cultures, including the Chinese, recognize there are some factors that are completely out of the control of the individual.  These factors are related to our fate or destiny.

In the Western world we often have conflicted opinions about fate or destiny.  While one part of us stubbornly clings to the notion that we all make our own life circumstances (a very American concept, to be sure), we secretly harbor the belief that it is possible for the heavens to smile or frown on us.

Many people will joke about Friday the 13th, for example, but in actuality dread its arrival.  Others don’t like to see black cats crossing in front of them.  Sports enthusiasts and professional athletes are well known to be very superstitious all in an effort to influence their luck.  Feng shui is one way to address luck.  What will we be when we grow older, how will our circumstances change throughout our lives, that is what can be called “Heaven Luck.”  It is what we are destined to do, marry, and/or become.

There are other types of luck as well.  These types of luck are related to time, environment, our personal integrity and character, and lastly, our own will – our efforts at making something of our life.  You will be pleased to know that these types of luck can be influenced.

In particular, we can influence our luck by influencing our environment.  This is feng shui.  Where we sleep, where we dine, where we relax and rejuvenate – this is what gives us good environmental, or “earth,” luck.  This is where the arrangement of items in your home, the surrounding topography, etc., all come into play.  It is also how you keep your home or office.

It is said that there is a “God of Luck” and he does not like a dirty place.  Therefore, it makes sense that unlucky people often live in messy environs.  Think about it.  Have you ever looked in a car in the parking lot next to you and just based on the car and the fast food wrappers on the floor, etc., made an assessment of the kind of person who drives that vehicle?  I have and I’m sure you do, too.  What would someone say about you if they were able to peer into your closets, drawers, or garage?  A clean house is a lucky house!

So, what can you do to influence your earth luck with feng shui?  Here are some guidelines.  Be thinking about these as we approach the Lunar New Year on February 1st.  These are some of the foundations of feng shui that can help you get your year off to a second – or maybe a first? – good start!

6 Ways to Gain Feng Shui Luck

1.  Learn and understand the basics of feng shui.
This can help you to apply remedies and enhancements that will help you hold down bad luck and enhance good luck!

2.  Prepare for the coming New Year.
Every New Year we have TWO opportunities to start anew -- the Western New Year of January 1st and on the Chinese New Year when the first New Moon of the year arrives.  This gives us a chance to clean up and clear out our houses, get our goals in order, and make the most of our homes and offices.

3.  Make a blessing tree.
Tibetans often make prayer flags that hang in the wind to release their prayers to the heavens.  You can do this with a tree in your yard.  Purchase a good amount of gold or red ribbons.  Then, write your wishes for the coming year on the ribbons and then tie them to the branches.

(Writing your goals and wishes down is a tremendous way to see them come to fruition!)  Then let the winds carry your wishes to the heavens. Do this the night or the day before the lunar New Year, if possible.  This would be a nice ritual to do at each new moon!  It is also more environmentally friendly than a balloon release.

4.  Rearrange your furniture.
If possible, move large heavy sofas or other furniture to keep the energy fresh and new in your home.  If not, then simply moving and cleaning under the furniture is sufficient.  Don’t forget to vacuum under sofa and chair cushions.

5.  Enhance your Northwest chien corner for assistance luck.
Having a powerful or influential person in your life is a blessing.  Start thinking about how you can cultivate these types of people, or person, in your life.  Next, activate the northwest corner of your house or office.  Place a windchime in this corner and have a fan blowing on it to keep it tinkling beautifully all day.  You can also add a symbol of three solid lines here.  Consider painting these lines on a canvas and placing in this location.

6.  Gain recognition luck.
Tap the luck of the phoenix for added recognition.  The phoenix is found in the south or out the front door of your home.  To activate, place a boulder out the front door of your home.  The phoenix represents efforts to rise from the ashes again and again.  The phoenix, a symbol of success, can bring a boost in recognition and even fame.  Create the phoenix by placing a mounded rock or mound of earth in front of the house.  Alternatively, you can place peacock feathers in the South sectors of the house or living room or add red elements here.
