The Feng Shui of Toilets
Publisher, The Red Lotus Letter
One of the most important elements of concern in feng shui is the toilet. Centuries ago, toilets were outside of the walls of a home. Nowadays, no one would want a home that didn't have a toilet and indoor plumbing. In and of themselves, toilets press down chi.
Depending on where they are located, they can impact your health, your wealth, your standing in the community -- even your romance. Because cleanliness is considered good luck in feng shui, it is important that you don't compound their negative energy by not keeping toilets meticulously clean.
All toilets should be enclosed in their own rooms or hidden from view as you enter the room. Feng shui principles teach that toilets can actually harm your health, wealth, and well-being if they are situated in the wrong places. Below is an explanation on how the toilets can impact your health -- and what you can do about it.
BEDROOMS: Toilets should never share the same wall as a bed. If a bed is against the wall and the toilet is against that same wall on the other side, then move the bed. This is very unhealthy. Likewise, you should never see or hear a toilet or bathroom from your bed. This can lead to respiratory problems and loss of wealth. Block the view some way and you will help your health and wealth.
KITCHENS & DINING ROOMS: Bathrooms and toilets that are off of the kitchen are another health concern. Always keep the door to the toilet closed so that someone in the kitchen cannot see the bathroom, and definitely not the toilet, from the kitchen. Even the visual thought of mixing wastes with food is distasteful and can have a negative health impact.
If the toilet can be seen from the dining room, this creates another health hazard. Block the view with a curtain or partition of some kind. If a toilet upstairs is over the kitchen or dining room, try to move the table or discontinue using this bathroom.
FRONT DOORS: Toilets and bathrooms that can be seen from the front door rob the occupants of career opportunities – or worse yet – put the career you-know-where: in the toilet. Always close the door and make sure the toilet cannot be seen from the front door.
If you have a toilet OVER the front door (such as on a second floor), always be sure to keep a bright light on in the foyer or entrance way. This will help burn up the negative energy. Toilets over or close to the front door create problems for the sector where they are located, such as the wealth, romance, or health secotr.
TOILETS IN THE SW (woman/romance/marriage): Toilets in the SW portion of the home will make marital troubles, or will cause someone to remain single a long time. Again, keep them closed and the door shut. Put a plant in here or bamboo rods to drain the energy here.
TOILETS IN THE NW (helpful people/breadwinner/man of the house): Toilets in the NW portion will bring difficulties to the breadwinner of the home. A bright light is the best counter to a bathroom in this location. Another suggestion is to add blue decorations here. Just be sure to NEVER put any candles in this bathroom or in the NW portion of the home. This is a very, very important rule because it can cause a sudden loss for the breadwinner of the family.
TOILETS IN THE EAST (health/family realtionships/first son): A toilet here impacts family relationships and the first son in the family. Over come this by hanging a 5-rod hollow windchime above the toilet.
TOILETS IN THE SOUTHEAST (wealth/abundance): Handle the same as in the east.
TOILETS IN THE WEST (children/creativity): A toilet here causes problems for the children in the family. Correct this by painting the door to the toilet red or keeping a bright light turned on. Do not paint the room white or decorate with metal or metal colors.
TOILETS IN THE NORTHEAST (wisdom/education/self growth): A toilet here can cause you to make dumb mistakes that might embarrass you. Add a plant in here or paint the room green to drain the negative energy here.
TOILETS IN THE NORTH (career/opportunities): A toilet here can cause you to suffer with job losses, career unhappiness, or lack of opportunities. Do not have any blue, black, or purple in here. Hang a 5-rod hollow windchime here or a large stone tied with a red ribbon next to the toilet.
TOILETS IN THE SOUTH (fame/reputation/social status): This creates a problem with your social standing. People will not think favorably of you and may be a source of backstabbing and politicking and gossip. Keep lights low and decorate in blues/blacks. A bubbling water fountain would be another good idea, too!
TOILETS IN THE CENTER OF THE HOUSE: This is such a common problem. Bathrooms in the center of the house drain vital energy. If you can, paint the room red and place candles in here. Or, decorate with as many red objects as possible to stimulate fire energy. Another suggestion is to keep a bright light on in this bathroom.
Where IS the best place to put toilets? Well, for most of us, the toilets are where the builder put them. However, if you are building a home, try to place the bathrooms on the outer walls in their own enclosed room, such as a water closet. Short of that, keep the seats and lids down, and the door to the bathroom closed at all times.
Toilet Remedies and Cures
Mirrors: Try putting a small round mirror (about 4” in diameter. You can get these at craft stores.) above the toilet and one on the door to the toilet. If you can’t find a round mirror to put above the toilet (to reflect the bowl), then try putting a mirror over the toilet. Mirrors stimulate energy that the toilets drain.
Plants: Thse normally should never be in a room with a toilet, unless your toilet is in the NE, SW, or Center. If you have a bathroom with a water closet, plants in the bathing area are OK (still not preferred), but definitely don’t have plants or pictures of flowers with your toilet unless it is in the sectors described above.
Colors: Use the color recommendations noted above.
