CHANGING FROM PERIOD 7 to PERIOD 8
Feng shui entered a new "period" on February 4th, 2004. That’s because feng shui, just like time, evolves. That means that like time, feng shui is also fluid and changing. Each feng shui period lasts 20 years. We are currently in a “metal” period of 7. Therefore, metal was the prominent element for the past 7 years. This is why we have seen such growth in the past ten years of metal industries, such as technology, etc.
In the coming Period 8, we will see earth industries prosper. Anything to do with soil, stones, building, construction, etc., will all do well. Tap this energy by decorating in stone and earth colors (yellow, taupe, stoney-gray, reds, terracotta, orange, and beige), incorporating stone and earth elements (brick, stone, ceramics, porcelain, terracotta, etc.). Use earth shapes, such as low flat rectangles and squares when you are incorporating design ideas.
Right now, there is a debate regarding the necessity of renovating your house to make it a Period of 8 house or whether that is even necessary. Some say it is absolutely unnecessary to make changes to bring a house up to the current period, some others say that, basically, all the energy in a space will essentially wither up and die if the house is not brought to the next period by renovating it. My belief is somewhere in the middle.
It is always important that we frequently refresh and renew the energies in our spaces. Simply renovating them periodically with fresh paint, redecorating, rearranging furniture, clearing out, decluttering, and, everyone’s favorite, frequent cleaning, all qualifies as part of a renewal process.
Remember, energy is attention… and where you put attention, you are inviting energy. And, fortunately, it is not necessary to employ radical reconstruction or major renovation or renew the energies of your home But it is important to renew the energy (and attention) to certain critical areas of the home, such as your bedroom, living room, front of the house, and entryway.
A fresh coat of paint, some new landscaping, recovering an old sofa, and replacing carpets are perfect examples of refreshing and renewing the energy of your home – and helping bring it to the next period. Consider reinvigorating your space with attractive plantings, keeping up with repairs and maintenance, and doing periodic focused renovations (such as renovating/refreshing the front door, entrance areas, and/or landscape). If you do want to do reconstruction, though, you certainly can, but it is not absolutely necessary.
What will I be doing to my end-of-Period-7 house? I will be focusing on landscaping the front of the house, having our builder finish final repairs on the house, and begin developing a decorating scheme for the coming year.
FOR EFFECTIVE FENG SHUI YOU MUST DIAGRAM YOUR SPACE
If you have not taken the time to diagram your space, please be sure to do so now. It will help you place your enhancements correctly and maximize the results you get from feng shui. My book, Applied Feng Shui, explains in great detail exactly how to do it. To do so is also to help you make certain you know exactly where each direction is in your space. This is critical and it is important that you do it correctly in order to achieve the results you want.
Over time you have heard me repeatedly say that you must use a compass to determine the true directions of your space. That’s because the directions are altered in your home or office merely by the objects in the space – and this can range from the studs and nails in the walls to the type of foundation you have.
It is why determining where your south sector is by where the sun rises and sets is neither accurate nor effective. You must use a compass. Furthermore, as the seasons change, so does the course of the sun. In the winter, the sun sets in a more southwest direction than western. So you see, you cannot know exactly what direction your home is until you take a compass reading.
Another important aspect in regarding the directions of your space is to know where all eight directions fall. Many western compasses only show you the cardinal directions (N, E, S, W), and so you may not know exactly where NE or SW is in relationship to these directions. This is very important to know. Below are the degrees of the compass for each of the eight directions.
North:
337.5 – 22.5
Northeast:
22.5 – 067.5
East:
67.5 – 112.5
Southeast:
112.5 – 157.5
South:
157.5 – 202.5
Southwest:
202.5 – 247.5
West:
247.5 – 292.5
Northwest:
292.5 – 337.5
Be sure to mark each sector of your home according to the direction. Now that you know the degrees, you should be able to mark it accurately. Doing all this takes a little time and a little effort. And, I’ll admit, the information can also be a little confusing, too. But, it’s worth taking the time to work it out. Plus, you will be amazed by all the benefits you receive. So in light of all you stand to gain, isn’t it worth it? For those of you who want the benefits of classical and the more complicated flying star feng shui, I’ve worked to make the information as simple and straightforward as possible for you.
